I’m Not Okay: Anxiety - Kevin Wehr

1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV)
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

Our job is to cast, God’s job is to care.

Anxiety is a meteor shower of ‘what-ifs’

It’s a low-grade fear, it’s an edginess, it’s a cold wind that just won’t stop howling. It’s not so much a storm as it is just a hunch. Maybe even the certainty that a storm is coming. Always another storm. Sunny days are just an interlude. Sunny days are just an interlude. A person can’t relax in life. You can’t enjoy the sun too much. You can’t really let your guard down because peace is temporary. It’s just short term so you don’t sleep well. You don’t laugh much. You don’t whistle when you walk. It’s a meteor shower of what-ifs. Well, what if I don’t get the job? What if I don’t get the bonus? What if I can’t afford braces for the kids? What if our kids grow up with crooked teeth? What if they don’t get a boyfriend or girlfriend? What if someday they’re standing on a street corner holding up a cardboard sign that says, “My parents never bought me braces?”

The presence of anxiety is unavoidable, but the prison of anxiety is optional.

Fear sees a threat and it reacts

Anxiety imagines a threat and it gets stuck

Philippians 4:4-7 (NIV)
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Don’t live in a perpetual state of day after day, week after week, month after month anxiety

Certainty is a cruel imposter

Perceived control creates calm.

Lack of control gives birth to fear

Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

God is good AND God is in control

Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything.

Isaiah 6:3b (NIV)
Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.

2 Corinthians 1:20a (NLT)
For all God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding, “Yes!”
