The Summit is a drop-in afterschool hangout space for West Linn middle schoolers located in the Cascade Summit Shopping Center. Designed with teens in mind, it’s a comfortable place to talk, share a snack with friends, play Xbox Kinect and more. It has an industrial loft feel, with exposed ductwork and a raised seating area in one corner. Four large flat-screen TVs adorn the walls, a stage sits at one side and all of the furniture can be rearranged. There are cellphone charging stations along one wall and the space has Wi-Fi for today’s tech-savvy kids.

What are the operating hours?

It will be open from 4-5:30pm on WLWVSD school days, and will open early on early release Wednesdays. Hours for no school days are still being determined, and are based on available funding.

What will kids do at The Summit?

That’s up to them! They’re welcome to visit Safeway, Starbucks, Mean Street or any of the other merchants in the shopping center, then bring their purchases in to The Summit to enjoy – or they can buy drinks and snacks at our snack bar. While they’re here, they can just hang out and talk to their friends or use the free Wi-Fi. For the active types, there are Xbox Kinect consoles and games, cornhole beanbag toss games, an indoor Nerf basketball hoop and a real basketball hoop out the back door. Kids can also use the paved space behind the center, or head down the stairs to Tanner Creek Park.

How is The Summit supervised?

A paid Center Director will be in charge of operations at The Summit, with background-checked volunteers providing additional support and supervision.

Is The Summit appropriate for my child?

Only you can decide if The Summit is appropriate for your child. The Summit is not afterschool care, but a drop-in center where students can hang out. They are not required to sign in and out, just as they would not be asked to do so anywhere else in the shopping center. Students are free to come and go as they wish – but we believe they’ll WANT to stay once they check it out.

In the end you need to decide if The Summit is right for your child, so please feel free to contact us with any questions.

We welcome dependable volunteers who love hanging out with middle schoolers. Just fill out this form to let us know you’re interested, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
